Is Your Name on the 2012 List??
As Florida residents, we share a natural curiosity in reviewing one particular list of names each year. Names with the potential to "pack a powerful punch." Names that when uttered, speak in volumes, themselves. Names that may leave their indelible marks upon history. So exactly what do Gordon, Joyce and Oscar have in common this year? You guessed it. They each hold a special place on this year's 2012 List of Hurricane Names!
Interestingly, the trend of "hurricane-naming" made its popular debut in 1953 following suit to naval meteorologists' protocol. Similar to that of naming ships (which trend continues today), only female names were chosen. In 1979, however, male names were incorporated therein, and today, the trend of "every other name" on the hurricane list is, in fact, male.
Hurricane season officially begins on June 1st of any given year and ends on November 30th, The 2005 Atlantic hurricane season was the most active Atlantic hurricane season in recorded history, including two Category 5 storms whose names will live forever in history, never to be repeated: Katrina and Wilma, two of the costliest and most intense hurricanes on record (as well as the first time a "W" name was ever used in the Atlantic).
And now, with sincere hope for a relatively calm hurricane season this year, here's the list you've been waiting for...
